A Shopify notification is just an email that Shopify sends by itself, without you touching anything. The moment a customer buys something, Shopify writes them an email that says “Thanks for your order!” — you never typed it, Shopify already had it ready. This guide shows you exactly where all of those pre-written emails live in your Settings → Notifications page, so you can find the one you want to replace.

1

Open Settings

In your Shopify admin, look at the bottom-left corner of the screen. Click Settings (it has a little gear icon).

2

Click Notifications

In the Settings menu, find and click Notifications.

3

Scroll to “Customer notifications”

This page lists every automatic email (and text message) Shopify can send to your customers. It's organized into small groups — order emails, shipping emails, account emails, and a few more. The full list is in the table below.

4

Click the one you want to change

Clicking a notification's name opens it. You'll see the current subject line and a preview of what the email looks like right now.

5

Choose how much you want to change

You now have two options. Customize email templates is a quick, no-code way to swap the logo and colors. Edit code, near the bottom of the page, is the one you want if you're pasting in a full Pagenflow template — it opens the raw HTML.

Every Shopify notification type, in plain English

Shopify groups its notifications by what they're about. Not every group applies to every store — you'll only see “Local pickup” ones if you offer local pickup, for example. Here's what each one means:

GroupNotificationSent when…
OrdersOrder confirmationA customer finishes checking out.
OrdersOrder editedYou add or remove items from an order that's already placed.
OrdersOrder canceledYou or the customer cancels an order.
OrdersDraft order invoiceYou send a customer an invoice to pay online.
ShippingShipping confirmationYou mark an order as fulfilled and add tracking.
ShippingShipping updateThe tracking status changes — out for delivery, delivered, etc.
Local pickupReady for pickupAn order is ready to be picked up in-store.
Local pickupPicked upThe customer has collected their order.
Local deliveryOut for delivery / DeliveredA locally-delivered order is on its way, or has arrived.
RefundsRefund processedYou issue a full or partial refund.
Gift cardsNew gift card / Gift card receiptA gift card is created, or sent to its recipient.
AccountCustomer account welcomeA customer creates an account, or you invite them to.
AccountReset passwordA customer asks to reset their password.
Only Shopify Plus stores can fully turn a notification off. On every other plan, these emails always send — you can only change what's inside them. That's exactly what this series is for: replacing the content, not switching the email off.

For Shopify's own reference, see their Setting up customer notifications help page.
